Our vintage Japanese poster features the Daruma (だるま) is a Japanese papier-mâché figurine. In Japanese culture, it is a figurine of wishes, luck and prosperity.

A ritual is associated with the Daruma, in fact when buying a figurine in a temple, the owner draws the first eye while formulating a wish, an objective. Subsequently it is exposed in full view and high up in his house. Indeed, one must put his Daruma clearly in view in order to keep in mind his wish in order to be called to act. The Daruma is not a call for divine intervention but rather an aid to realize oneself his wish. When the latter is realized, one must then draw the second eye and bring the statuette back to the temple.
