In the Japanese culture where the word originated, the oni -鬼- represented ghosts, trolls, monsters... written with the Chinese character for "ghost" the root of the word means "hidden". Originally evil, the oni now has a more protective image. This is why many Japanese wear the mask during traditional festivals because it is said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
